Why Israel’s plans for regime change failed in Iran

As debates among Iran’s leadership continue, one intelligence agency had a very different vision for Iran’s postwar future. The New York Times and Haaretz news outlets recently reported that Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, Mossad, had prepared an elaborate plan to overthrow Iran’s leadership in the early stages of the Iran war. According to the reports, the plan began with killing Supreme Leader Khamenei, before providing aerial support for a Kurdish offensive from Iraq into Iran. Israeli officials hoped that as the offensive gained weapons and support, the Iranian public would join in until the effort reached Tehran, where Israel would install none other than hardline former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran’s new leader.
