The Real Moses Explained: The Man Who Argued With God

You have seen the paintings. The bearded patriarch holding two stone tablets while light streams from his face. The staff. The splitting sea. The man who stands above the water like he was born to lead. That is the Moses of Sunday school felt-board lessons and Hollywood epics. It is also a flattening of one of the most volatile, argumentative, reluctant, and unfinished characters in the entire Hebrew Bible. The real Moses does not want the job. He runs from God's first command. He argues five different ways at the burning bush. He bargains with God on a mountain to save Israel from destruction. He strikes a rock when he is supposed to speak to it. And he dies on the wrong side of the Jordan, looking across at a promise he gave his life to but is never allowed to enter.
