Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote and its main port. The city grew around a natural lagoon, which has historically provided shelter for fishing boats and merchant vessels. The name Arrecife comes from the Spanish word for "reef," a reference to the volcanic formations off the coast that protected the harbor from ocean waves. In the 18th century, the city became an important defensive point, a fact that is still evident in the coastal forts built to protect against pirate attacks. Today, Arrecife remains the island's business and transportation hub, unlike the resort areas in the south.
