Scaramouche became something of a bête noire for the composer, who judged it too slight to merit publication — a familiar a story in the history of music! The publishers loved it, and amid his own resentful grumblings, Milhaud kept providing new arrangments for them. The versions for clarinet and saxophone are best known, but you’ll find concert band, wind sextet, chamber trio, triple guitars, and even 16-saxophone arrangements.
