Peak fall colors late September. *ROUTE OVERVIEW:* Starting point: Marble, Colorado Primary destination: Crystal Mill (5 miles from Marble) Route: Crystal River Road (County Road 3) Optional continuation: Schofield Pass to Crested Butte (additional 7 miles) Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Time: 5 hours round trip to Crystal Mill only Vehicle: Stock Jeep Rubicon capable Best season: Late September - Early October for peak fall colors *CRYSTAL RIVER ROAD TO CRYSTAL MILL:* 5 miles from Marble to Crystal Mill. Extremely rough with bowling ball sized rocks throughout. Stock 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon successfully completed route. Allow 5+ hours round trip from Marble. Lower pool area at Crystal Mill now closed to vehicle access. *CONTINUING TO SCHOFIELD PASS:* From Crystal Mill, continue 7 additional miles over Schofield Pass (elevation 10,707 feet) to Crested Butte. Stock Rubicon capable but more technical than Crystal River Road section. Narrow shelf roads with exposure. Plan full day for Marble to Crested Butte traverse. *VEHICLE CAPABILITY:* Stock Jeep Rubicon Requirements: 4WD mandatory, high ground clearance essential, rock sliders recommended, skid plates protect undercarriage, all-terrain tires sufficient (35s not required), recovery gear (tow strap, shackles, shovel). Jeep Gladiator: Longer wheelbase requires precise line selection and multi-point turns on tight switchbacks, especially on Schofield Pass continuation. *CRYSTAL MILL:* Built 1892 as compressor station for nearby silver mines. Perched on rock outcrop above Crystal River. One of Colorado's most photographed structures. Multiple viewpoints provide stunning photo opportunities. *FALL COLORS:* Peak colors late September through early October. This video captured peak conditions.
