The Alibi Sisters - A Return to Yiddish World

Yiddish and its role in the history of Ukraine We shot this little movie in the summer of 2021, the last summer in Kyiv before the war. It was supposed to be released in the winter of 2022 but the senseless bloody war waged by russia against us has changed our plans. The young man who was supposed to edit the video is now on the frontline. Our consultant, editor and tutor with whom we learned Yiddish has left abroad. And us - for a long time we felt that it wasn’t the right time for all the projects from our past peaceful life. But today we realized the importance of the material we had prepared. We are confident that many will find the information that we share in this video interesting and helpful. It’s possible that certain facts we present will become unexpected and will be a great occasion to reflect on our common history. However, the most important thing to us is that this movie has become a document of our age. We speak russian on camera standing in the downtown of Kyiv and talking about Jews, their language, customs, their important role in the development of the city, and the close relationship between our cultures. And six months later the missiles were launched exactly at that place, by those who call us nazis and want to make us speak russian with these missiles, thus achieving the opposite results. Although sick logic and fearsome absurdity have become the trademark of the aggressor in this war. Coming back to our movie about Yiddish, we’re going to tell one thing: the culture and traditions of Jews who lived on the territory of modern day Ukraine are an important part of the world cultural context. We have to remember about it and remind others. We think that in order to understand our own place in the cultural process of the 20th century, Ukraine and Ukrainians have to restore the historic memory and to thoroughly study the heritage created in Yiddish. And we try to contribute by doing what we do best - by singing. Він мав вийти взимку 2022, але безглузда кривава війна, яку розв’язала проти нас росія, змінила наші плани. Хлопець, що мав зробити монтаж відео, - тепер на фронті. Наш консультант, редактор та педагог, з якою ми вивчали їдиш, - виїхала за кордон. А нам довгий час здавалося, що всі проекти з минулого мирного життя якось вже не на часі. Але сьогодні ми зрозуміли наскільки важливим є той матеріал, що був підготовлений нами. Ми впевнені, що для багатьох з вас інформація, якою ми ділимося в цьому відео, буде цікавою і корисною. Можливо, деякі факти, що викладені нами, стануть для вас неочікуваними і такими, що дадуть привід замислитись над нашою спільною історією. Проте, найважливішим, на наш погляд, є те, що цей фільм сам став документом епохи. Ми говоримо в кадрі російською мовою, стоячи в центрі Києва і розповідаємо про євреїв, їх мову, звичаї, їх визначну роль у розвитку міста і тісний взаємозв’язок наших культур. А вже через 6 місяців в ці самі місця полетіли ракети тих, хто називає нас нацистами і намагається цими ракетами змусити говорити російською, роблячи тим самим зовсім протилежні речі. Втім, хвора логіка і лякаючий абсурд стали головними візитівками агресора в цій війні. Вертаючись до нашого фільму про їдиш, скажемо лише одне: культура та традиції євреїв, що жили на території сучасної України - є важливою частиною світового культурного контексту. Ми маємо це пам’ятати і нагадувати про це іншим. Нам здається, що Україні і українцям для усвідомлення свого місця в культурному процесі XX століття необхідно відновити історичну пам'ять і всерйоз займатися вивченням спадщини, створеної на їдиш. І ми намагаємося зробити свій внесок тим, що вміємо найкраще — співом.
