He wanted to open the first major automobile museum in France. Life didn't allow him the time. Roger Baillon, a self-taught transporter from Niort, assembled one of the most extraordinary car collections ever gathered in France: more than 200 vehicles—Bugatti, Delahaye, Talbot-Lago, Ferrari, Maserati, Hispano-Suiza… All rescued from the scrapyard in the 1950s and 60s, stored at Château Gaillard in Échiré (Deux-Sèvres). Then came bankruptcy. Seizures. Silence. For half a century, these cars lay dormant under corrugated iron, forgotten by the world. In December 2014, two experts from Artcurial discovered this treasure. Among the wrecks was a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider, once owned by Alain Delon, which had been missing for 43 years. On February 6, 2015, at Rétromobile, it sold for €16.3 million.
