In 1992, Bangladesh enacted the "Child Labor Prohibition Ordinance," but 30 years later, child labor continues to be rampant in urban factories. Most children work in harsh, unsafe environments, often in construction sites, textile factories, and battery plants. The number of child laborers in Bangladesh is 7.4 million, or 45 percent of the total child population. A boy working in a battery factory is shocked three or four times a day, yet earns only $6 a month, one-tenth of what an adult would earn. A girl who has worked in a textile factory since the age of 12 was forced to drop out of school to make a living.
