It is the story of two sons of a Hessian magistrate who, after their father's early death, plunged into abject poverty, struggled through workshops and day labor, endured humiliation at the Kassel Gymnasium from aristocratic classmates, and finally, at the University of Marburg under Friedrich Carl von Savigny, found the vision that would define their entire lives—the vision of a German culture that rediscovered its own linguistic, poetic, and mythical roots. We experience their years in Paris under Napoleonic rule, where the brothers worked as their teacher's assistants in the defeated capital and, ironically, in the shadow of the victor, discovered their deepest connection to their homeland. We follow them along the almost silent paths through Hessian villages and middle-class homes, where they collected the tales that, as fairy tales, would travel the world in more than 160 languages.
