Zwei Brüder, ein Schicksal — Wie die Grimms Deutschland erfanden | Dokumentation

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm—two names inextricably linked, names that have profoundly shaped German culture, language, and identity. In this comprehensive biographical documentary, we follow the brothers from their childhood in a half-timbered house in Hanau to their quiet, industrious retirement in Berlin. It is the story of two sons of a Hessian magistrate who, after their father's early death, plunged into abject poverty, struggled through workshops and day labor, endured humiliation at the Kassel Gymnasium from aristocratic classmates, and finally, at the University of Marburg under Friedrich Carl von Savigny, found the vision that would define their entire lives—the vision of a German culture that rediscovered its own linguistic, poetic, and mythical roots. We experience their years in Paris under Napoleonic rule, where the brothers worked as their teacher's assistants in the defeated capital and, ironically, in the shadow of the victor, discovered their deepest connection to their homeland. We follow them along the almost silent paths through Hessian villages and middle-class homes, where they collected the tales that, as fairy tales, would travel the world in more than 160 languages. We are there when, after the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, German self-confidence awakened and the brothers' work suddenly encountered a changed world. This documentary also illuminates the Grimms' scholarly achievements, which extend far beyond fairy tales—Jacob's groundbreaking German Grammar, the sound law named after him, the monumental German Mythology, and the German Dictionary, that lifelong project on which generations after the brothers would continue to work. We also consider the moral courage of the Göttingen Seven, that momentous occasion in 1837 when the brothers preferred to forfeit their positions and income rather than swear an oath against their conscience. A story about two brothers who remained inseparable throughout their lives. About the secret hand of a sick younger brother that shaped an entire body of work. About the power of an alliance born of poverty, loyalty, and shared labor. And about the sometimes surprising impact that two quiet scholars can have on the cultural self-perception of an entire people.
