Layering consists in stripping a small portion of a branch or shoot in an annular way and then surrounding it with soil and enclosing it in a container, usually plastic, recycled; when the branch has emitted roots, the new plant is cut below the layered point, it is therefore a technique that exploits the ability of young branches to emit adventitious roots. There are three main types of layering (each of them has its own variations): stump layering, arch layering or simple layering and aerial layering; Aerial layering is usually used on tropical and ornamental plants, fruit trees, it is obtained by wrapping a branch with a peeled portion in a sheet containing soil and tying the sheet like a sack at the two ends. The part of the branch in contact with the soil will emit adventitious roots; when the roots are well developed the branch will be cut below, the sheet will be removed and the branch will be transplanted to another place; Stump layering is usually used to produce fruit tree rootstocks. The mother plants are arranged in rows and after a year, before the vegetative recovery, they are pollarded at the height of the collar: this operation stimulates the emission of numerous suckers which, once they have reached 15ā20 cm in height, will be covered at the base with soil in order to stimulate the emission of adventitious roots. At the end of the season, you will thus obtain rootstocks or plants ready to be uprooted and transplanted. Well-maintained stump layering can last for several years. Arch layering, also called simple layering, is usually used for plants such as vines, ornamental plants or fruit trees. The technique consists of bending a young branch of a plant and partially burying it, then turning it upwards supported by a stake. The part of the branch that remains underground will emit adventitious roots and the aerial part will emit new shoots forming a new plantlet. Once rooting has taken place, the connecting branch will be cut. The purpose of layering is to interrupt the downward flow of the elaborated sap, so as to provoke the meristematic cells to come out of the roots. In this video I will perform a stump layering on my citrus fruit, a lemon tree. The lemon (Citrus Ć limon) is a fruit tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. The common name lemon can refer to both the plant and its fruit. According to genetic studies, the lemon is a hybrid and derives from the cross between the bitter orange and the citron. The lemon is native to southern China, the Indian region of Assam and northern Burma. I will choose a nice branch and with a knife I will remove a part of the bark in a ring-shaped way, with the aloe gel (stimulant, natural rooting) I will impregnate the peeled part to stimulate rooting even better. I will insert a vase, with compost inside, I will irrigate the compost and finally I will wrap everything with a recycled white sheet. The ideal period to perform a layering is April, May, June, the spring period in which the plants are in full vegetative activity.
