PWS MK114 First Look: The Long Stroke Piston AR

In this video, I take a first look at the PWS MK114 Mod 2-M—Primary Weapons Systems’ take on a long-stroke piston AR, and one of the more interesting departures from the standard direct impingement formula. We start with the operating system: what a long-stroke piston actually is, how it differs from both direct impingement and short-stroke designs, and why PWS built their rifles around it. This is really the foundation of the MK114—everything else makes more sense once you understand that choice. From there, we step back and look at PWS as a company—their origins, how their product line evolved, and where the MK114 fits within that lineup today. PWS has always leaned into this “AK DNA in an AR format” idea, and the MK114 is probably the clearest expression of that. Then we head to the range. On the range, I run the MK114 for first impressions on recoil impulse, gas behavior, handling, and overall shootability. We’ll talk about how that long-stroke system actually feels in practice, how it compares to a standard M4 Carbine, and whether that hybrid concept translates into anything meaningful on the trigger. This isn’t a full teardown or long-term review. Think of it as a first pass—some background, some live-fire impressions, and an honest look at what the MK114 feels like out of the box rather than a final verdict. If you’re into non-standard ARs, piston systems, or rifles that blur the line between platforms, this one should be right up your alley.
