Bible Passage: "When Mordecai learned of all that had happened, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, crying with a loud and bitter cry. (2) He came to the king’s gate, for no one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter the king’s gate. (3) In every province where the king’s word and decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many were (4) Then Esther’s maids and eunuchs came and told her, and the queen was greatly distressed. She sent clothes to Mordecai to put on, so that he would not accept the sackcloth. (5) Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom the king had appointed to serve her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai and find out what was happening and the reason for it. (6) So Hathach went out into the city square to meet Mordecai at the king’s gate. (9) Then Esther answered Hathach and sent him a message to Mordecai: (10) “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that for any man or woman who enters the inner court to see the king without being summoned, there is but one sentence: death, unless the king extends the golden scepter to them so that they may live. And I have not been summoned to see the king these thirty days.” (12) They told Mordecai the words of Esther. (13) Then Mordecai told them to answer Esther: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. (14) For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your household will be at risk.” "Your father will perish; and who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?" (15) Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai: (16) "Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish." (17) So Mordecai went away and did everything Esther had instructed him."
