Started in 1780. Their original Kentucky distillery is now Woodford Reserve. James E. Pepper is the oldest bourbon brand being actively produced in the state of Kentucky — and the story behind it reads like a bourbon soap opera. James inherited the distillery at 15 after his father's sudden death. His godfather stepped in to run it. That godfather? E.H. Taylor. The same E.H. Taylor who later went bankrupt, came back to collect what he was owed, and took the property when James couldn't pay. That property is now Woodford Reserve. James was also the nephew of Zachary Taylor — the 12th President of the United States. They survived Prohibition without a medicinal whiskey licence — selling off aging stock through a loophole nobody else thought to use. Closed in the 1960s. Came back in 2017. We went in for a barrel pick — three samples, quickest pick we've ever done — and one of them was exceptional. Everything unfiltered. 18-month dry aged barrels.
