🌏 Become friends with Setegi : https://bit.ly/WorldTravel_EBS Spreading a staggering 1,000 km across Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, The Altiplano Plateau, known as the Roof of South America. Along this plateau, stories of colorful lives begin at high altitudes reaching 4,000 meters above sea level! On Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, live people who have put down roots among the reeds; on the vast plains of the Andes, healers live who travel in search of medicinal herbs and offer peace. Even on the dizzying Yungas Road, known as the Road of Death, and on the Uyuni Salt Flats, a one-of-a-kind landscape, lives lived with hope. Shining moments encountered amidst the magnificent nature of the Altiplano Plateau! We invite you to South America, a sweet and enchanting land. ■ (1) The World They Live In, Lake Titicaca The first leg of our journey through the Altiplano highlands begins in Puno, a lakeside city in southern Peru. Puno serves as the starting point for the northern Altiplano region and is also the gateway to Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world. Among the approximately 40 islands in Lake Titicaca, the first to catch travelers' eyes is the Uros Islands. There are people who have settled and put down roots on numerous artificial islands created using "totora," a type of reed. The people of the Uros Islands share a unique lifestyle, living no differently from the mainland, such as cultivating potatoes and raising livestock on the reeds. They must travel by boat to get to school, the post office, or even the restroom! Let us immerse ourselves in the charm of the Uros Islands alongside these people who live in acceptance of their fate rather than inconvenience. Three hours by boat from the Uros Islands. Amantani Island is located slightly further inland from Lake Titicaca. It is a remote village without electricity that preserves the ancient traditions of the Andes intact. The residents cultivate potatoes using farming tools passed down from antiquity, without the aid of machinery, and transport their crops by donkey. They also have their own unique storage methods adapted to an environment devoid of electronic appliances like refrigerators. Freeze-dried potatoes are made by repeatedly freezing harvested potatoes, stomping on them to remove moisture, and drying them. Just as their great-grandmothers did, the sight of the women of Amantani Island stomping on potatoes barefoot against the setting sun reveals the traces of time and wisdom. At night, Amantani Island becomes louder than during the day. This is due to dance parties held in the only house with electricity on an island where the only light comes in dimly from solar power. It is a gesture of consideration from the residents for the travelers who have come to visit this island nestled deep and remote. Let us step into the world of these people who live a special life, though not affluent. Amantani Island ■ (2) A Joyful Pause, the Uyuni Salt Desert In the El Alto region of Bolivia, there are still Yatiri shamans who perform traditional Andean rituals. Before crossing the Yungas Road, known as the "Road of Death," we perform a ritual to pray for safety to a Yatiri. The Yungas Road is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Beyond that perilous and dizzying road, we encounter a village with an idyllic landscape. We meet people who appreciate the gifts of the land, from a mother and son picking fruits like bananas ripe under the hot sun to a father tending to the rice fields. A special feast enjoyed after sweating together. The meal they serve is enough to give you renewed energy. The climate of the Altiplano plateau becomes drier as you move from the north to the south. The Uyuni Salt Desert, located in the center of the southern region, allows you to witness this change at a glance. The Uyuni Salt Flats is a unique landscape unlike any other in the world, consisting of a vast salt field spanning approximately 12,000 square kilometers. Standing on the transparent salt is so mystical that it feels as if you have entered a heavenly playground. The journey to the Uyuni Salt Flats, a transparent desert that touches the sky, is also romantic. It is a slow train that cuts across the plateau. Boarding the train in Oruro, marveling at the plateau unfolding outside the window, and laughing at the stories of the people next to you, you will arrive at the Uyuni Salt Flats before you know it. We reveal the breathtaking, endlessly transparent scenery of Uyuni! ■ (3) The Beginning of the End, The Atacama Desert Mt. Huayna Potosí reaches a peak of over 6,000 meters. Beginners need the assistance of a Sherpa to climb it. You cannot help but be surprised by the appearance of the Sherpa you meet at the base camp before the climb—she is a female Sherpa climbing the mountain wearing traditional attire. Neither ice walls nor the biting cold can stop them. These women, who began this work for economic reasons but now climb th...
