The village of Starye Zyattsy dates back to the 16th century. In 1751, during the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, an Orthodox parish was opened in Starye Zyattsy and a wooden church was built in honor of the Nativity of Christ. But at that time, the "Road of Sorrows"—the Siberian Highway—ran through Udmurtia, along which convicts were transported. Stops were made at post stations, one of which was in the neighboring village of Uzi. Exiles often died en route. They were buried and held funeral services in local churches, including this one. In 1863, Priest Mikhail Sherstennikov arrived in Starye Zyattsy. The priest was then 18 years old. At just 22 years old, he began to fight with all the faith and ardent energy of youth for the restoration of the parish, as well as the spiritual and cultural life of the village. A wooden church dedicated to the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple was built in Starye Zyatsky, and almost 10 years later, construction began on a larger stone church. More than a million bricks were needed to build this church. The church was heated by six furnaces and crowned with a four-ton bell. People from all over the area came to see the beautiful church. Fairs were held six times a year, lasting three days. Father Mikhail turned to the foundation of first-guild merchant Fyodor Chernov in Yelabuga for help, and in 1878 the first chapel, dedicated to Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria, was consecrated. The church had three altars in total—in addition to the main Kazan altar, there was also a chapel dedicated to Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. Father Mikhail dedicated over 60 years to serving in the church. Starye Zyattsy. His ascetic work earned him the love of the people. The Kazan Cathedral was closed in 1938, and a club was established there, then a dairy plant, and later, Mikhail Sherstennikov's house became a branch of the Savings Bank. Now this sacred place of the Udmurt land is dying...
