Finn Juhl's Lost Sofa

After 80 years in the shadows, the biggest design treasure in the history of Danish design has now resurfaced and will be presented at Live Auction 10 December with a record-breaking estimate of DKK 1.5 to 2.5 mio. The treasure – a rare set of furniture by the renowned Danish furniture architect Finn Juhl – has been known in design circles since the Cabinet Maker’s Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1939, when it was exhibited, photographed and even admired by the Danish Crown Prince Frederik IX and Crown Princess Ingrid. The pictures of the sofa found their way to almost all books about Finn Juhl's furniture, but the sofa itself went under the radar. Since 1939 the sofa group has made quite a travel – read more at bruun-rasmussen.dk – therefore it needed a little professional help to find its way back to its former beauty. Here design expert Peter Kjelgaard takes us behind the scenes at the helpful upholsterers LM Tapetsererne in Copenhagen and shows us the process of restoring the sofa treasure to its original razor-sharp lines as in 1939.
