The Grange Supermarket Explosion. Chaos in Brisbane's Suburbs.

On 30 December 1973, just before 1:00 PM, a massive gas explosion decimated a shopping strip on the corner of Days Road and Paling Avenue in Grange, Brisbane. The blast was so immense it was heard up to five miles away and showered the neighbourhood with debris for a quarter-mile radius. The epicentre was a building housing a grocery store owned by Salvatore Vella and an adjacent real estate office, both of which were completely destroyed. Miraculously, despite the shop being closed at the time, there were no fatalities, though a family of five in a passing utility vehicle took the brunt of the impact and were hospitalised with injuries from flying glass. Dozens of surrounding homes suffered significant damage, with some even shifted off their foundations. In this video, we examine archival footage and the enduring mystery of what sparked the "Grange Blast". Was it a gas main leak, a faulty refrigerator, or remnants of a former service station?
