▶ Seonheulgot (Gimnyeong-ri, North Jeju-gun) 1.4 million pyeong – The Korean Peninsula's Largest and Last Evergreen Broadleaf Forest Belt 700,000 pyeong of evergreen broadleaf forest rooted in a plain (elevation 100m) of basaltic bedrock. 31 of the 65 evergreen species found nationwide are present here. Notably, it is home to the largest colonies of Japanese oak and Castanopsis sieboldii. A nature learning site where the entire process of vegetation succession (grassland → thicket → mixed deciduous and evergreen forest → evergreen forest) can be observed at a glance—a unique feature in the country. How do evergreen broadleaf trees reign as the kings of the forest? They eliminate other plants through leaf allelopathic effects and sunlight blocking, preventing them from taking root. In the order of vegetation succession, it takes 200 years to progress from grassland to the climax stage of an evergreen forest. Currently, Seonheulgot is a young evergreen broadleaf forest consisting of 50-year-old trees, and the forest's potential is limitless. ▶ Seonheulgot preserves the pristine nature of its natural ecosystem. Confirmation of habitats for the Ministry of Environment protected species, including the Rhinoceros Beetle, Korean Toad, Giant Water Beetle, and the Jeju endemic species, the Viper. According to the Special Act on Jeju Island Development, Seonheulgot is currently a candidate site for a large-scale resort in Jeju. However, the evergreen broadleaf trees with a diameter of 13 centimeters are part of a 23-year-old natural forest and correspond to Grade 8. The flawed ecological survey of Seonheulgot, stemming from policies designed to facilitate development, must be clearly investigated. Composed of four zones—forests, grasslands, ponds, and mixed forests that transition into woodlands—Seonheulgot is connected by a natural ecosystem cycle, providing optimal habitat conditions for water, shelter, and food. If any of these areas are developed, the ecological corridors will be severed. It is necessary to accurately survey and evaluate ecological values, such as vegetation, and implement various measures, including the establishment of an ecological park.
