Spiritual Alertness: 9 things according to Jesus. Spiritual Alertness (Mark 13:24-32) 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus calls us to keep watch, stay alert not to be caught off guard resulting in death. Spiritual alertness assists us during the decisive moments like the second coming of Jesus. But spiritual alertness challenges the complacency in every disciple of Jesus. What Jesus said in Mark 13: 24-32 Jesus said some shocking things. How the world will end: the sun will be dark, moon will have light, and powers shaken. And amid all this chaos, Son of Man will come with great power along with angels to gather the chosen – those spiritually alert. The spiritual alert will see things pass away; Jesus’ words remain. The spiritually alert will be the ones who keep watching, stay alert and pray – be vigilant doorkeeper or a watchful servant. According to Jesus, during all times, but during decisive moments, these nine behaviors will be the most important ones for spiritual wakefulness – spiritual preparation – spiritual readiness for Christ’s coming. Jesus already spoke about these behaviors earlier in his life. Now, Jesus was preparing the disciples one final time amid fear of the end time. With these behaviors, Jesus instills hope in the disciples.
