In the games the lifers feel pain and death and emotion, none of it is really acting it’s more like a reality show. Outside of the game they are actually normal people with normal jobs. While in the game they look different and have different names (and sometimes their voices are slightly different) no one knows who the lifers are outside of the games, due to them all being anonymous.
