On September 27, 2001, shortly before 10:30 a.m., Friedrich Leibacher stormed the Zug government building and shot 14 people within minutes, injuring 18 others, some seriously. The perpetrator then killed himself. This arguably the most gruesome act in Swiss criminal history changed the lives of many and, in many ways, led to a rethink. Friedrich Leibacher was an extremely complex personality. When he shot himself after the assassination attempt, a life marked by criminal offenses, personality disorders and psychiatric evaluations, dreams of emigration, and failed attempts to lead a normal life came to an end. The assassination was preceded by a years-long legal dispute between Friedrich Leibacher and the Zugerland Transport Company. At the center of the case was a bus driver whom Leibacher accused of alcohol abuse. Despite investigations and numerous discussions, no agreement was reached. Friedrich Leibacher felt completely misunderstood by everyone involved and vented his anger in a pamphlet: "A Day of Rage for the Zug Mafia," he called it.
