Megalochori | Santorini, Greece ► Video guide, 2 min. | 4K

Megalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the island of Santorini. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century. Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine canavas, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates. The Heart of Santorini is a hidden spot that has been attracting increasing amounts of attention. It is a heart-shaped hole in a rock, through which you can see the Aegean Sea, the sky and the volcano. It is located in the area of Megalochori village, near the charming little chapel of Agios Nikolaos which is picturesquely situated on the edge of the caldera, on the scenic route leading from Megalochori to the thermal springs of Plaka. At the foot of the caldera is located the Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built into the volcanic rocks. It is a single-nave, whitewashed building built into a rock face with a triple peach-coloured bell tower and a small courtyard.
