Changes in 'Me' and the 'World' from a Buddhist Perspective Gratitude Requires Training! The Power of a 'Grateful Heart' Conveyed by a Monk (2) Timeline by Key Topic 00:01 The Essential Difference Between Suffering and Emotion: The Eight Sufferings of Buddhism Buddhism clearly distinguishes between suffering and emotion. Suffering is divided into eight types (the Eight Sufferings) that afflict everyone. Birth, Old Age, Sickness, and Death (Samsara): The suffering of making a living, the suffering of aging, the suffering of illness, and the suffering of death are unavoidable sufferings that accompany the physical body. Suffering of Separation from Loved Ones (Aebyeolligo), Suffering of Meeting with Hated Ones (Wonjeunghoego), Suffering of Not Obtaining What One Desires (Gubudeukgo), and Suffering of the Abundance of the Five Aggregates (Oumseonggo): The suffering of parting from what one loves, the suffering of meeting what one hates, the suffering of not obtaining what one desires, and the suffering arising from the Five Aggregates (form, sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness) belong to the realm of emotion. The Buddha taught that while physical suffering is unavoidable, the mind cannot become ill, stating that one can transcend suffering. 08:20 Emotions Are Not Objects to Be Discarded, But 'Capabilities' Emotions are not meant to be eliminated or suppressed; rather, they are our 'capabilities' that can become either pain or a sense of accomplishment depending on how they are used. Just like the misguided education that "men must not cry," a culture that suppresses emotions is unhealthy. All emotions—sadness, anger, joy, and so on—are natural. Teachers like the Buddha also felt sadness and anger, but they used those emotions in a broader sense, rather than on a personal level. 15:45 How to Sublimate Anger into Energy to Change the 'World' Beyond personal irritation or rage, anger toward the absurdities and unfairness of the world can become a great energy that transforms the world. As a child, witnessing the senseless suffering of the survival of the fittest in an agrarian society, the Buddha felt anger toward the world, and this led to teachings for the happiness of humanity. There are figures like Patriot Yun Bong-gil who, despite living short lives, left a significant mark on history through their righteous anger toward the world. Emotions are like a sharp "master sword"; if one does not understand its structure and how to use it, it can harm oneself or others. One must learn the proper way to use them. 24:10 The Most Concrete Method for Handling Emotions: Find a "Teacher" and Learn It is important to learn the structure of emotions (principles, materials, birth and death). Buddhist scriptures are like instruction manuals that reveal the raw reality of emotions. It is a great blessing to hear the wisdom of those who have experienced it, even without having experienced it oneself. Through a teacher's teachings, one can gain the wisdom to handle emotions. The question, "Why must only I change?" is resolved when one understands that each person has their own universe. If I change, my world changes, and this leads to a change in the world. A teacher must maintain a mental distance from the village that is neither too far nor too close, while understanding the stories of the secular world and conveying their teachings. 35:00 Gratitude is Wisdom Gained Through 'Learning,' Not 'Training' A grateful heart is not a matter of training, but rather learning the 'eye' to discover what is truly to be grateful for. It is important for the older generation, such as parents and teachers, to lead by example and demonstrate how they express gratitude. Modern society, accustomed to convenience, can cause us to lose the abili...
