Networks in C++ - What's Actually Changing? - Ignas Bagdonas - CppCon 2025
https://cppcon.org --- Networks in C++ - What's Actually Changing? - Ignas Bagdonas - CppCon 2025 --- Interfacing to networks is an assumed given for pretty much any application and system today. Networks have a tendency to be overlooked – it is just a transport pipe that carries JSONs from here to there. From the perspective of C++ networks tend to be abstracted away by the layer of libraries of various sorts and flavors, and the interfaces and modes of operation are assumed to be fixed. Such an approach certainly has a merit for uses where neither the functionality nor the performance is much of a deciding factor – however, the network engineering itself is also advancing, there are new transports being universally deployed (QUIC), there are multiple attempts trying to define a network interface beyond the historical POSIX API, and the requirements for application performance and responsiveness demand for practically usable asynchronousness. This talk intends to discuss the developments in the intersection of networking and C++: new protocols and interfaces, new paradigms of signaling from and towards the application, performance aspects, and developments around the asynchronous models of interfacing to the network. --- Work at Hudson River Trading (HRT): https://tinyurl.com/safxfctf --- Ignas Bagdonas Ignas Bagdonas has been involved in network engineering field for over two decades, covering operations, deployment, design, architecture, development, and standardization aspects. He has worked on multiple large SP and enterprise networks worldwide, participated in many of the world's first technology deployments, and has been involved with building community awareness via conferences, seminars, and workshops. He currently holds a role of Principal Architect with Equinix, focusing on end to end network architecture evolution and new emerging technologies. Ignas is active in the IETF and has been speaking at RIPE, NANOG, various IXP forums and regional NOGs. --- CppCon is the annual, week-long face-to-face gathering for the entire C++ community. The conference is organized by the C++ community for the community. You will enjoy inspirational talks and a friendly atmosphere designed to help attendees learn from each other, meet interesting people, and generally have a stimulating experience. Taking place this year in Aurora, Colorado, near the Denver airport, and including multiple diverse tracks, the conference will appeal to anyone from C++ novices to experts.
