Mozart versus Clementi: A Virtual Competition A Fortepiano recital by Robert Hill Fortepiano by K Hill after A Walter ca 1790 Live 2008 On Christmas Eve, 1781, Wolfgang Amadée Mozart and Muzio Clementi engaged in a musical duel at the Imperial court in Vienna. Both pianist-composers improvised and played their own works, before improvising together on two fortepiani. The contest was considered to be a draw. My recital program recreates a virtual version of their competition, freely drawing on solo fortepiano compositions by both composers, beginning with Clementi's Sonata in B-flat Major Opus 24, No. 2, which Clementi himself played during the competition.
