Surrealism is an artistic movement from the first half of the 20th century that sought to free itself from all constraints, including: The constraints of reason and morality, by exploring the unconscious, dreams, madness, and passionate love. The constraints of writing, by giving free rein to automatic writing and the free association of images. The birth of Surrealism can be explained by several major events: The First World War, which left young people with a sense of horror The influence of Dadaism and its desire to provoke The discovery of the unconscious, theorized by Freud, which inspired the Surrealists to explore this mysterious aspect of humanity through writing. The Surrealists therefore explored the unconscious, freeing the imagination through surprising imagery, and placing love at the heart of their writing. Also very important: the Surrealists were politically engaged writers, convinced that literature should bring about social change. The main French Surrealist authors were André Breton, Philippe Soupault, Paul Éluard, Louis Aragon, Pierre Reverdy, and others. Surrealism also affected other art forms. Examples include Dali-e Chirico in painting and Luis Buñuel in film.
