ABOUT THIS SERIES: In February 1942, during the Second World War, the British Army surrendered to the Japanese in Singapore. 70,000 Indians fighting for the British army were taken prisoners. The Japanese soon released these prisoners and banded them to form the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) that would fight along with the Japanese to liberate India from the British rule. In 1995-96, to commemorate the 50th year of the Declaration of India’s Independence by the Government of Azad Hind, Akhil Bakshi organised and led the Azad Hind Expedition from Singapore, where the Indian National Army (INA) was formed, to the Red Fort in Delhi, which was their goal. The expedition team included five leading officers of the INA: Col. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, Col. Lakshmi Sahgal, Capt. SS Yadava, Capt. Janaki Thevar and Capt. Jacob. At Moirang in Manipur state, bordering Myanmar, where Col. Shaukat Ali Malik, raised the national flag for the first time on Indian soil, the expedition was received by over a hundred INA veterans from all over India. This 20-part series presents interviews with some of these INA officers and soldiers who narrate their experiences fighting against the Allied forces in East Asia during the Second World War.
