Francesca Ammaturo Litigious Kinships:Pride Events between Internal Conflicts and Community-Building

Often considered to be the privileged site for solidarity and unity for members of the different segments of the LGBTQAI+ community, Pride Events around the world often harbour internal divisions that are hard to reconcile. Conflicts abound around disparate issues such as how welcomed trans, racialised, migrant, and disabled people feel at these events, the overwhelming presence of corporate sponsors or, more recently, the rift around the recognition of the Palestinian genocide in Gaza. This seminar looks at these divisions to assess whether these “litigious kinships” on display at Pride Events contribute to strengthen or weaken the LGBTQAI+ community’s stance vis-à-vis the rise of far right and anti-gender movements globally. Dr Francesca Romana Ammaturo is an award-winning researcher and a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and International Relations at London Metropolitan University. She has been researching LGBTQIA+ rights and social movements, and in particular Pride Events, for over a decade, authoring various research articles on the subject. In 2025, she has published for Bristol University Press the book “The Politics of Pride Events: Global and Local Challenges” which offers a critical and decolonial look to the global study of Pride Events from an empirical perspective.
