WHAT IS THE PLACEBO EFFECT? PLACEBO IS THIS "FAKE MEDICATION" - ANY INERT TREATMENT (THAT DOES NOT INTERACT WITH THE BODY AT ALL) THAT IS USED AS IF IT WERE ACTIVE. THE PLACEBO EFFECT IS WHEN THIS FAKE MEDICATION LEADS TO POSITIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS, IMPROVING SYMPTOMS. THE NOCEBO EFFECT IS WHEN THIS FAKE MEDICATION LEADS TO NEGATIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS, THAT IS, SIDE EFFECTS. IN SOME WAY, THE SIMPLE FACT OF BELIEVING WE ARE TAKING MEDICATION CAN CAUSE SYMPTOMS TO EASY OR WORSE. DUE TO A COMPLEX AND STILL POORLY UNDERSTOOD INTERACTION BETWEEN OUR BELIEFS, FEELINGS, AND OUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY. Then they compare how many of the people who took the real medicine improved compared to the placebo. This is how they find out if a certain medication works for a certain disease – it's called a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. WHAT YOU WOULD REASONABLY EXPECT: THAT SOME OR ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO TOOK THE REAL MEDICINE WOULD IMPROVE THEIR SYMPTOMS, AND THAT NONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO TOOK THE FAKE MEDICINE WOULD IMPROVE – AFTER ALL, THEY TOOK NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL.
