As the current holder of the Presidency of the EU Council, Spain was designated to host the 3rd Summit of the European Political Community (EPC). And so the city of Granada opened the doors to one of its most iconic places, the Alhambra, for King Felipe and Queen Letizia to welcome leaders attending the Summit. Today the King and Queen of Spain received European government leaders in Granada. At the Alhambra palace they hosted a dinner for 50 heads of state or government and the leaders of the European institutions. As Spain holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, it organised summit for the European Political Community. The EPC is an intergovernmental forum for unscripted political and strategic discussions about the future of Europe, established in 2022 after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ahead of the dinner King Felipe and Queen Letizia invited their guests to a Flamenco Show in the Nasrid Gardens of the Alhambra palace. Among the heads of state or government that were welcomed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were president Sarkozy of France, president Zelensky of Ukraine, Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and president of the European Commision Ursula von der Leyen. President Zelensky was received in an audience with the King. The president stated: “I thank King Felipe, the Royal Family of Spain and the entire Spanish people for their continued support of Ukraine. We appreciate the assistance provided by Spain since the first days of the full-scale invasion of the aggressor state in Ukraine’s struggle for our common European values.” Mohammed ben Al-Hamar (Mohammed I) was the first king to move to the Alcazaba and no records about a new palace being built are kept until those of Abu l-Walid Ismail. Only the Mexuar is now left because Yusuf I destroyed it completely. He started some improvements in the Comares Tower, the Court of the Myrtles and the Baths. These improvements were finished by Mohammed V, who added them all to the Mexuar, extended the gallery that would later be called Machuca and constructed the Palace of the Lions. The Alhambra is open daily with long opening hours and occasional nighttime visits. Visits to the Alhambra commonly last three hours or more and require a lot of walking. Getting to the Alhambra from downtown Granada is easy on foot, by bus, or by car. Time-slot reservation tickets are essential to see the Nasrid Palace while the rest of the Alhambra complex may be seen at any time. European leaders visited on Wednesday (October 5) Spain’s Alhambra palace following the European Community Summit. Almost all the leaders, except Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelenskiy and British Rishi Sunak, attended the dinner ceremony hosted by Spain’s Royals and acting PM Pedro Sanchez at the Nazareth palaces of La Alhambra, the majestic monument of Granada. The gathering focused on re-stating commitment to Ukraine after political turbulence in both the U.S. and Europe raised questions about continued support. Meetings on the margins also focused on crises between Azerbaijan and Armenia and between Serbia and Kosovo.
