Hello from beautiful Vienna! Welcome to this virtual walk in Vienna, recorded in 4K HDR for the best viewing quality. This video was recorded in the district of Vienna called Leopoldstadt. This is the second district, adjacent to the first district and separated by the Danube Canal. I started the walk at the Danube Canal and now I'm going to Leopoldstadt. Over 103,000 people live together in peace here. Are you wondering why this district is called Leopoldstadt? Well, that's not a nice and honorable story, but some things happened back then that fortunately don't happen like that anymore. In 1670 the Jewish population of the town was expropriated and expelled by order of Emperor Leopold I. The synagogue was burned down by the Viennese, and the Leopold Church was built on the site, which was dedicated to Saint Leopold, the emperor's patron saint. This is where the name Leopoldstadt came from. History can sometimes (actually very often) be quite gruesome. But back to the present. The busy Praterstraße, which you will see in the video, will be made attractive and climate-friendly by 2024. The 1st Viennese bicycle highway runs from the Aspern Bridge to Lassallestraße. This means that cyclists in Vienna have significantly more space and are therefore safer on the road. I very much welcome this step and hope for many imitation projects in Vienna.
