The Scandalous Life of Consuelo Vanderbilt: The Prisoner Duchess of Blenheim Palace
The Scandalous Life of Consuelo Vanderbilt: The Prisoner Duchess of Blenheim Palace Subscribe to the channel: @LostGrandeurUK On 6 November 1895, an 18-year-old girl was led down the aisle of St Thomas Church in New York with red rims around her eyes. She had been locked in a room at Newport for 4 weeks, threatened with the murder of the man she loved, and finally broken by her mother. The carriage carrying her to the altar was held outside the church for 20 minutes while she tried to compose her face. The man waiting at the altar had been told he could marry her only because she came with 2,500,000 dollars in railway shares. The cage was Blenheim Palace, and it had 187 rooms. In this video, we talk about the entire imprisonment and escape of Consuelo Vanderbilt, including the locked room at Marble House, the threat against Winthrop Rutherfurd, the Duke's confession on the honeymoon train that he had married her only for the money, the 40-foot dining table at which they ate in silence, the affair with Gladys Deacon, the bicentenary banquet of 1904, the separation of 1906, the London County Council seat she won in 1917, the hospital she opened in her Mayfair house during the Great War, the East End milk fund she paid for out of her own allowance, the reconciliation with her suffragette mother Alva, the Catholic annulment of 1926 in which Alva confessed to coercion before the Westminster tribunal, the 35 happy years with Jacques Balsan, and the memoir she sat down to write at 75 to set the record straight. Subscribe and stay for the histories the audio guides never tell you. Comment where you are watching from and tell me what you make of Alva Vanderbilt's confession in 1926.
