Gardiens de la paix : un an pour apprendre à protéger

Just after the November 2015 attacks, the French government decided to bolster its police force. Starting in 2016, 5,000 new police officers were recruited, on average twice as many as in previous years. Their training began in July 2016. For nearly a year, from the day they were admitted to the police academy until the end of their internship, we followed the 120 police officer trainees at the Roubaix Police Academy. Among them were Tidiane, a former nightclub bouncer who chose to change his life to serve France; Amélie, a mother and sports coach who wanted to experience the realities of the job firsthand; and Julien, a student who had always dreamed of becoming a police officer. For these future officers, it required sacrifices and tremendous effort. Mandatory boarding, strict discipline, flag-raising ceremony every day at 7:30 a.m., no alcohol allowed, intense physical training, and numerous theoretical courses... A demanding and particularly rigorous program. After five months of training, all the students were sent into the field. Assigned to a police station, they faced real, sometimes very dangerous, situations. Their mission: to ensure daily security. Their training: to know how to react to all types of situations, from domestic violence to pickpocketing, from attempted suicide to terrorist attacks. We accompanied them on their first patrols, interventions, and arrests, where the student police officers were not spared. The training ended with the traditional cap-throwing ceremony, and most importantly, with the assignment of positions. Based on their national ranking, with each stage of training assessed, the future police officers can choose their assignment or take the remaining positions. Great satisfaction for some, disappointment for others. But for each of them, the honor of serving their country. This documentary was produced by Ligne de Front and directed by Vincent Prado.
