MESUJI, KOMPAS.TV - Police arrested four perpetrators of the slaughter of a protected tapir in Mesuji, Lampung. After killing the tapir, the perpetrators distributed the meat to local residents. After arresting the four perpetrators, identified as WS, KS, TS, and MPY, police are still searching for two other perpetrators. Police confiscated spears, machetes, leftover meat, tapir skin, and a recording of the tapir slaughter as evidence in the protected animal slaughter case. The Lampung-Bengkulu Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) condemned and regretted the slaughter of the tapir, a protected species. The Head of the Lampung-Bengkulu BKSDA Forestry Unit, Muhammad Husin, stated that the Mesuji area is a tapir habitat. Police charged the perpetrators of the tapir slaughter under the Conservation Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
