They are divided into cephalochordates, urochordates, and vertebrates. Vertebrates are the most complex animals on the zoological scale. Humans are also classified within this group. All animals characterized by the presence of vertebrae are classified within a single phylum: the Chordate Phylum. However, within this phylum we find not only animals with vertebrae and skulls, but also invertebrate animals. So, what characteristics make them all belong to a single group? The main characteristic of Chordates and which gives the group its name is the fact that these animals have, in at least one phase of their lives, a structure called the Notochord. The notochord, also called the dorsal cord, is a structure that looks like a thin, flexible rod located on the back of the living being. This structure has the function of supporting the animal's organism. In vertebrate animals, the notochord is only present in the embryonic phase. As the animal develops, it is replaced by the spinal column, which begins to support the organism. In addition to the notochord, vertebrate animals also have, in at least one phase of their lives, structures called gill slits. These slits, also called pharyngeal slits, are derived from the pharynx of these animals during embryonic development. It may seem strange, but yes, you had structures that externally resemble shark gills when you were a small embryo. Another thing you may not know is that all chordates have a “tail” at some point in their lives. Even us humans. This “tail” is called the post-anal tail, which can be bony or just muscular, depending on the species of chordate. Questions?
