How does community-supported agriculture (CSA) work in Northern Germany? 28-year-old gardener Charli Bley is a new member of the young team at the Vierlande CSA in southeast Hamburg. Together with her colleagues, she grows regional and seasonal vegetables – today, the focus is on cucumbers! Step by step, the video shows planting in the vegetable tunnel: stringing wires, fertilizing the beds, tilling, and finally planting the cucumbers. All this is done under time pressure, because it's hot in the tunnel and the plants need to be in the ground quickly. There are a few minor mishaps, teamwork, and practical tips for growing vegetables directly from the field. The rhubarb harvest is also coming up. The members of the Vierlande CSA pick up their organic vegetables once a week, either directly from the field or from regional depots – it doesn't get any fresher than that! Charli talks about the importance of sun protection and teamwork, and what she finds so inspiring about community-supported, sustainable agriculture.
