[Recorded May 10, 2017] The iPod and the iPhone transformed entertainment, communications, and computing in the space of less than a decade. What was particularly dramatic about the global impact of handheld computing is that it emerged from a small team of hardware and software designers led by Steve Jobs who had returned to reinvigorate a company that was widely believed to be on life support in 1997. Tony Fadell was a young computer designer who had worked at General Magic when he was hired as a contractor to design the first iPod. He would go on to lead the hardware development of the first iPhone and then leave Apple to found Nest, a company that designed a connected thermostat, which would be sold to Google for $3.2 billion in 2014. In a conversation with Computer History Museum historian John Markoff, Tony explores how mobile and internet computing has changed the world in the past decade and what might happen in the next one.
