Both Books, and Only a Glimpse

Between September 2008 and March 2014 I recorded all forty-eight preludes and fugues of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, in no particular order, in my Brooklyn apartment. After years away from the instrument—the playing had stopped, and stayed stopped, for the better part of a decade, not by choice, exactly—the project began as a way to get my hands back, one prelude and fugue at a time. It became something else. This is the story of how it started, what five and a half years inside these books did to me, and how the music found its way back to the center of a life it had drifted out of. It's also a story about what remains after a project like this is finished—not mastery, exactly, but a renewed sense of how much there is still to learn. That, as it turns out, is where this channel came from. I'm still just an amateur.
