PhD researcher at University of Florence, as well as a researcher at the German Historical Institute in Rome and consultant of Historical Archives of Senate of the Republic. Her research explores social and cultural studies of public and collective war memories to gender and women's history. She has particularly interested in the study of post-war purge trials for mass rape and sexual war crimes committed in Italy during WWII. Her recent book is Guerra alle donne. Partigiane, vittime di stupro, "amanti del nemico" (1940-1945), [The War on Women Partisan Women, Rape Victims and «Mistresses of the Enemy»: 1940-45], Einaudi 2012. Through memories that have been «silenced», the private letters and personal accounts that have been abandoned for years to the silence of forgetfulness, Ponzani reconstructs the experience of those Italian women who chose to take up arms and fight against the «war on civilians». Hidden within the war against the Nazis and the Fascists of Salò is a «private war» for women's emancipation, a war that was waged first and foremost against the traditionally second-class citizenship imposed upon women by the prevailing culture and by society, and not only Fascist society. For that reason, their battle even ran up against the moral prejudices of their fellow partisans, unwilling to tolerate the presence of women in the partisan formations. Laureata in Lettere con lode all'Università "La Sapienza" di Roma e borsista della Fondazione Luigi Einaudi di Torino (Manon Michels Fellow for European Culture studies in XX centuries), le sue ricerche s'incentrano sugli studi culturali e sociali relativi alle politiche della memoria, sui processi per crimini di guerra dopo il secondo conflitto mondiale e sulla storia di genere. Nel suo ultimo libro, Guerra alle donne. Partigiane, vittime di stupro, "amanti del nemico" (1940-1945), Einaudi, 2012, ha studiato le testimonianze e le memorie di donne vittime degli stupri di guerra durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, il loro modo di sopravvivere alle violenze di massa e a alle culture di guerra che usano lo stupro come arma per annichilire e umiliare il nemico sconfitto. Le memorie delle donne rompono il muro del silenzio sugli orrori della "guerra ai civili", a lungo occultati dalla memoria nazionale dell'Italia postbellica.
