Canon AL-1 Video 2: Operation | How to Take a Photo, Auto Mode, Film Loading, and Lens Changing
The Canon AL-1 was the first camera from Canon to confirm focus points. The rudimentary technology in this camera led to the highly sophisticated and complex autofocus systems in Canon cameras today. As the great-great grandfather of the Canon EOS cameras, the AL-1 has an important place in Canon history. Introduced as an entry-level camera, at the time the Canon AL-1 arrived, the use of a focus confirmation would have made many serious photographers view a Canon AL-1 user as an occasional hobbyist or worse. The Canon Quick Focus system in the AL-1 provided the user assistance in verifying focus. This opened the door to a wide array of potential photographers who lacked the sharpness of vision required for precise manual focus use. This allowed people with weak or failing vision to continue taking photos when other SLR cameras would be unusable. In that way, the AL-1 served as a foundation for later Canon EOS cameras while also opening photography to more people. The Canon AL-1 had some weaknesses, and the chief among them being the battery doors. These failed and broke easily, being of relatively flimsy design. They can be repaired, in an albeit ugly manner, with a paperclip or piece of still wire. The Canon AL-1 camera will almost certainly outlive the battery door.
