This old school, founded during the Bun’Ei era (1264-1275) by a master of Taira clan, and based on “Battō-jutsu” techniques, is considered to be the origin of all Iai and served as a base for the creation of Shinmusō Hayashizaki Ryu Iaijutsu. Hōjō Jinsuke Taira no Shigenobu had a revelation and uncovered secret sword techniques called “Manji-ken” during a dream he had at Tateoka, in the ancient province of Ōshū (also called the Mutsu province, in the present Yamagata-Aomori prefecture, north Japan), and he founded Shinmusō Hayashizaki Ryu Iaijutsu. It is said that Shigenobu contributed to the emergence of various schools, among which Tamiya Ryū, Ichinomiya Ryū, Hōki Ryū, Sekiguchi Ryū and Hasegawa Eishin Ryū. This style from the ancient province of Ōshū was then transmitted in the whole country, but it is in Tsugaru that the lord, Nobumasa, studied and perfected it. Then it was transmitted as it was within the Tsugaru clan under the name Shinmusō Hayashizaki Ryū.
