[Reporter] Yes, this morning, a band of rain clouds stretched long, centering on Chungcheong, the Seoul metropolitan area, and Gangwon. Now, as it moves southward, it has developed into a long diagonal line connecting Jeonbuk, Chungcheong, and Gangwon. Shall we take a look at the radar image? The dark blue and purple areas visible here and there are rain clouds that are pouring heavy rain exceeding 50mm per hour. Currently, they are distributed mainly over Chungnam and Jeonbuk, pouring down heavy rain of around 50mm per hour. Fortunately, they are constantly moving, so they are not lingering in the same area for long. Just moments ago in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province, heavy rain poured down, exceeding 50mm in one hour and 90mm in three hours, prompting the issuance of an emergency disaster alert for heavy rain for the first time since the start of the rainy season. [Anchor] Since a disaster alert was even sent out in Buyeo, does that mean even heavier rain is still to come? [Reporter] Yes, this rain is being influenced not only by a stationary front but also by cold air descending from an upper-level low-pressure system to the north. The rain clouds developed strongly as this cold air met the warm, humid air below. However, the important point is that this cold air is not descending straight down like a slide, but is coming down while rotating and creating a vortex, much like stirring coffee or draining water from a bathtub. Shall we take a look at the screen? Looking at this morning's radar, the rain clouds form a long band. Warm, humid air continues to be pushed in front of the rotating cold air, carried by the southwesterly wind. This air acts as fuel for the rain clouds, causing them to develop into long, stretched-out formations as they move. The rain falling this morning and right now is coming from these rain clouds in the front. Starting tonight, rain clouds developed from the rear will move in, marking the beginning of heavy rainfall in earnest. [Anchor] Are the rain clouds arriving tonight bringing a "water bomb"? [Reporter] Yes, shall we look at the screen again? Tonight, as the rear part of the cold air mass moves in, cold air from the northwest will begin to push down in earnest. We expect this to start arriving around 9 PM. While this cold air pushes the stationary front southward, the North Pacific High Pressure system remains in place below, ensuring a continuous supply of warm, humid air. As the mutual pushing force between air masses with different properties intensifies, the rain clouds become compressed into long, east-west lines, and their speed of movement slows down. Rain clouds, which had been stretching diagonally, are gradually shifting to a horizontal shape. When this happens, the rain clouds linger in one spot for an extended period, continuously pouring rain over the same area. Currently, these conditions are expected to be most pronounced in the Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, Gyeongbuk, and Gangwon regions. While rainfall from morning to afternoon was 20–40mm per hour, with some areas reaching around 60mm, there is a possibility of extreme downpours tonight, with hourly rainfall reaching 30–50mm and in some strong areas, up to 80–90mm. [Anchor] It is difficult to grasp the scale of rainfall exceeding 50mm per hour. How intense is that actually? [Reporter] Rainfall exceeding 30mm per hour is typically referred to as "heavy rain." Once rainfall exceeds 50mm per hour, roads with poor drainage become flooded, and visibility for vehicles becomes poor even with wipers turned to maximum. Even if this kind of rain continues for just one or two hours, flood damage can escalate rapidly. If rainfall exceeds 70mm, the risk of flooding increases sharply around underpasses and rivers, and if it exceeds 100mm, vehicles...
