Barcos | Rota das Aldeias Vinhateiras | Douro | Portugal
Barcos, its origin dates back to the Bronze Age, this village stands out in the landscape for its urban set developed around the mother church. Its urban fabric is made up of medieval buildings, imposing modern houses and modest vernacular and popular houses. From medieval times, the main church of Barcos and the Sanctuary of Nª. Lady of Sabroso. The old Collegiate House, Casa Magalhães Coutinho, Casa da Roda and the old Parish House are beautiful examples of architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its toponym, "Barcos", refers us, according to Almeida Fernandes, to the Germanic term «Barc», in its plural, alluding to landmarks of territorial delimitation. It is said that near the village of Barcos there was, in the early days of the Nationality, a medieval castle that was built by the land grantee to defend the Moorish onslaughts. Other authors mention that the ancient parish of Santa Maria do Sabroso, prior to the foundation of the nationality, would have given way, in the 14th/15th centuries, to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Barcos, to which the abbey headquarters would have been moved, which was also collegiate. However, the Gothic temple of Barcos, still of Romanesque inspiration, must have existed since at least the 13th century. Santa Maria do Sabroso appears taxed, at the time of the 1321 parish register of the Kingdom, at 300 pounds. Even after the change of the Collegiate headquarters to Barcos, the Church of Santa Maria do Sabroso continued to serve as the parish headquarters of Pinheiros, Carrazedo and Santa Leocádia, until the first half of the 18th century. Vineyard Villages Representatives of a social organization of landlords, overseers and rural workers that supported the main economic activity of the region over time – the wine culture –, the Vineyards Villages of the Douro are still the expression of the region's history where churches, chapels and houses estates, belonging to the region's winemaking aristocracy, coexist harmoniously with buildings of popular architecture.
