Every Name of God in the Bible Explained: One God, Many Introductions

📖 The new video is finally ready — and I'll just say it: this one might be my favorite we've ever made. Picture a young woman sitting alone by a spring in the middle of a desert. Her name is Hagar. She's a slave — Egyptian, pregnant, far from home, running from a household that treated her like a problem to be solved. Nobody knows she's there. Nobody is coming for her. And then a voice finds her. Before that moment is over, this runaway slave does something no one else in the entire Bible ever does: she gives God a name. El Roi — "the God who sees me." 👀 That's where everything begins. Because here's what most of us never stop to notice. You've read the word "God" a thousand times, and "the Lord" so often your eyes slide right past it — but you've probably never asked the simplest question. Which name? In the original Hebrew, there is almost never just "God." There is a specific One being named, and our English Bibles quietly flatten all of it into a couple of plain words. So in this video we slow down and actually look. We trace the names of God across the whole Bible and uncover the pattern hiding in plain sight: God never reveals His names all at once. He introduces a new one almost every time His people walk into a new kind of trouble. One God. Many introductions. First, the three names hiding underneath the English: ✨ Elohim — God as raw, world-making power, the Maker behind "Let there be light." ✨ Adonai — the Master, the One with the right to be obeyed. ✨ And the four letters, Y-H-W-H — the name the ancient Israelites believed was too holy to even speak, built from the Hebrew verb "to be." Not really a title. More like a declaration: I am. Then watch the names arrive, one crisis at a time: 🔥 El Elyon, "God Most High" — spoken over Abram by the priest-king Melchizedek after a battle. 🔥 El Shaddai, "God Almighty" — given to a ninety-nine-year-old man holding a promise that looked long gone. 🔥 Yahweh-Yireh, "The LORD will provide" — named on Mount Moriah, at the last possible second, a ram caught in the thicket. 🔥 Yahweh-Rapha, "The LORD who heals" — at the bitter, undrinkable waters of Marah. 🔥 Yahweh-Nissi, "The LORD is my Banner" — after Moses' tired arms were held up over a battle. 🔥 Yahweh-Shalom, "The LORD is Peace" — built by Gideon, a frightened man hiding in a winepress. 🔥 Yahweh-Rohi, "The LORD is my shepherd" — from a shepherd boy who knew exactly what that meant. 🔥 Yahweh-Sabaoth, "The LORD of Armies" — shouted at a giant by that same boy with five smooth stones. And because this channel cares about the truth and not the hype, we don't gloss over the messy parts either. 📜 Most of those "Yahweh-" names aren't really separate names — they're altar names and place names, the personal name joined to something God had just done. And the familiar word "Jehovah"? It isn't the original pronunciation at all. It's a much later blend of consonants and vowels — a beautiful accident of history. We don't pretend otherwise. But it all builds to one strange moment at a bush that burns without burning up. A washed-up shepherd asks God His name, and God answers with something that barely sounds like a name. Ehyeh asher ehyeh. "I AM WHO I AM." Not a description of anything He does — a name about what He simply is. Fifteen hundred years later, a teacher standing in the temple in Jerusalem picked up that same untouchable name and laid it on Himself in five words so bold the crowd turned on Him in an instant: "Before Abraham was, I am." The crowd understood exactly what He had claimed. When the Hebrew Scriptures were later translated into Greek, that name was rendered "Kyrios" — Lord — which is why the first Christians calling Jesus "Lord" were never just being polite. The name from the fire now had a face. 🕊️ And here is where it lands for you and me. The same God who thundered "I AM" — the name strong men were afraid to say out loud — invites us to call Him something almost shockingly small. Abba. Dad. The most powerful name in the universe, bending all the way down to the most personal one we have. So whatever you're carrying right now — feeling unseen, waiting on a door that won't open, watching something good turn bitter, or simply afraid — there may be a name of God shaped exactly like it.
