In a limited number of places on Earth, certain societies invented the mastery of plant and animal reproduction. To ensure their needs for food, leather, bones, and other products, primitive hunter-gatherer societies had to follow the migrations of large herds of bovids, deer, and other animals. Around 10,000 years ago, Neolithic humans discovered that capturing animals, domesticating them, and keeping them alive for use when needed allowed them to reduce the uncertainty regarding food availability that dependence on hunting created. The process must have consisted of a pre-domestication period in which, initially, humans accustomed their prey to their presence while following them in their search for food, and later, gradually retained them. This meant that they themselves had to take charge of providing food for the animals. Thus, they managed to domesticate several species, taking charge of moving the herds from one grazing area to another, emulating their natural movements, but now under their control. This sedentary lifestyle was linked to the emergence of agricultural practices, which tied humans to the land and also allowed for the cultivation of fodder for animals. Thus, when humans began domesticating herbivores such as cows, sheep, and goats and abandoned hunting and gathering, livestock farming emerged during the Neolithic period and, most likely, at the same time as agriculture. These animals, like cattle, served not only as meat animals, but also as pack animals for goods, plow pull, furs, and, later, milk and dairy products.
