The work is divided into twelve movements, each named after the incipit of the text. Pergolesi composed the work for solo soprano and alto voices during the last few months of his tragically short life at the age of 26. Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: “The first movement of the Stabat Mater is the most perfect and most moving that has ever issued from the pen of any composer.”
