It is a symbolic performance that represents the triumph of good over evil. The dance is steeped in tribal beliefs that twelve evil forces, one for each month, affect human life. Performers wear vibrant animal masks and traditional attire to depict these forces, with the dance serving as a ritual battle where good ultimately prevails. This dance is typically performed during festivals and special occasions, accompanied by drums and cymbals. Its storytelling and symbolic nature reflect the deep cultural heritage of the Sherdukpens and their belief in the cosmic struggle between good and evil forces throughout the year. Bardo Chham, which translates to "dance of horoscopes," also highlights the tribal connection to nature, spirituality, and community, making it an integral part of Arunachal Pradesh's rich cultural tapestry. The Gangteng Tshechu (also called Gangtey Tshechu) is a vibrant religious festival held annually at the Gangtey Monastery in the scenic Phobjikha Valley of Bhutan. The festival typically takes place between September and October, with the 2024 edition scheduled from September 16–18. This three-day event is steeped in centuries-old traditions and features sacred mask dances based on the Peling tradition, along with other performances unique to the region. These dances hold significant spiritual importance and are believed to bring blessings to attendees. The festival also features folk songs and concludes with the Nguedup Langwa ceremony, which offers spiritual blessings for wisdom and power. Locals dress in their finest attire, adding to the festival's lively, carnival-like atmosphere, which draws both Bhutanese and international visitors.
