For agricultural contractor Josef Mählmeyer and his team, the first sunny days of early March mean spreading liquid manure around the clock. They dispatch twelve trucks, two tractors, and five spreaders from Steinfeld in the Oldenburg Münsterland region of Lower Saxony. They are often on the road from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m., making up for lost time in the first few weeks. January 31st is usually a crucial date for farmers: "Liquid Manure New Year's Eve," as they call it. From then on, liquid manure can be spread on the fields again as organic fertilizer. But this year there was a problem: the harsh winter delayed the schedule. A month later than planned, they can finally get started. But nobody knows whether another cold snap or a rainy spring will cause further delays. Every day counts for the farmers, too. Liquid manure is an essential fertilizer that provides plants with vital nutrients, improves soil structure, and thus ensures good harvests. However, over-fertilization can lead to nitrate pollution in the soil. Farmers and agricultural contractors must precisely document how much liquid manure is applied to the fields.
