To mark the 100th anniversary of the Showa era in 2025, a photo book that offers a time-traveling experience was published in August. The book features a number of photographs comparing Sendai city's past and present. The publisher says he hopes the book will also serve as a learning opportunity for children. These are two photos of the west exit of JR Sendai Station. The one on the left shows the view in 1978, before the pedestrian deck was built. The photo book, "Sendai Time Machine," went on sale on August 27th. Masami Sato, Representative of Kaze no Toki Editorial Department: "Since this is a photo book that goes back and forth between the Showa and Reiwa eras, I created a time machine that allows you to travel back and forth between the past, present, and future," said Masami Sato, who edited and published the photo book. Using Showa-era photographs submitted by residents, he tracked down the same locations and photographed them with his smartphone from 2022 to 2025. I was inspired to create this book, as it would not only evoke nostalgia for adults but also help children discover the charms of their local area." Until 2024, Sato will be helping junior high school students learn about local history through "same-position" photography, in which they take photos of the same location from the same position as in old photos. He says this experience was what inspired him to publish the book. What are your recommended spots for "same-position" photography in Sendai? Sato shared one recommended spot. It seemed simple, but coffee shops and restaurants have opened since this photo was taken." The passageway at the east exit of Sendai Station is now lined on both sides with shops and an impressive atrium. Those who don't know will probably wonder if it's really the same place." And at the west exit of Sendai Station... A pedestrian deck has been installed, and the building's symbolism has also changed. Masami Sato, Representative of Kaze no Toki Editorial Department: "The big clock was a meeting place, and I often hear that people met here when they went downstairs to hang out or on dates. Now it's in front of the stained glass." The photo book features "now" and "then" scenes of 50 locations in the city, including Sendai Station and Aoba-dori. Masami Sato, Representative of Kaze no Toki Editorial Department: "The best thing to do is to go to the site yourself. That way, the changes are immediately obvious. You'll feel a lot more than just what's written here, so it's great to get a feel for that." The cover of the newly published "Sendai Time Machine" features Aoba-dori, and the growth of the zelkova trees lining the street gives a sense of the passage of time.
