He is the patron angel of the weak and oppressed. In the book of Numbers, Moses says that every Israelite has a guardian angel (6:24). This belief was incorporated into early Christianity and would flourish in the later traditions of medieval Catholicism and medieval Islam. In all these traditions, angels are divided into hierarchies or classes, with protectors generally at the top. Some of these hierarchies place Cassiel among the seven main archangels; others identify him as a cherub or seraphim; still others consider him a simple archangel (or "strongly aligned angel"). Regardless of his precise position in the angelic hierarchy, Cassiel has always been known as a valiant and dedicated protector of the weak and oppressed. Cassiel is a guardian angel, often called upon to protect those under attack. He is the patron angel of the weak and oppressed, also known as Casiel, Casziel of Kafziel. He is best known as the Angel of Solitude and the Angel of Tears.
